20 October 2008: Plan has distributed 9,000 school kits in Jacmel, southeast Haiti, as part of its emergency efforts to help communities hit by the hurricanes that swept across the country in August and September.
An estimated 180,000 children and their families have been affected by the storms, which killed 326 people and destroyed more than 10,800 buildings.
The school kits will help children to continue their education by providing basic learning materials such as notebooks, pens, pencils, set squares, compasses and rulers.

First to help
At the school kits project launch event, Plan Haiti’s Sponsorship and Grants Manager Samuel Lucien said that the project was another opportunity to reaffirm Plan’s commitment to quality education.
Speaking on behalf of the government, divisional delegate for the southeast, Zidor Fednel, expressed his thanks to Plan because it was the first to provide relief assistance to people affected in the southeast.
School support
Plaisimond Clerveau, the headmaster of Fils de Lumière school also welcomed Plan’s contribution to the relief efforts.
“Parents will be very grateful, because they have had difficulty purchasing new school kits for their children,” he said.
Vital assistance
School kits will now be distributed to children in the areas of Lavallée, Cayes Jacmel and Marigot.
Plan will also continue to provide emergency relief to communities and support efforts to provide psychotherapy to children traumatised by the disaster.
