The Media & Development Forum has been an opportunity for us children and youth journalists to meet with high personalities. One of them, Louis Michel, European Commission in charge of the Development and the Humanitarian issues, kindly accepted to offer us an interview.
Young Reporter (Y.R) : Do the authorities of the Euroean Union work towards the promotion of Child’s Rights?
Louis Michel (LM) : Of course, it is fundamental in the implementations of strong policies centred on children, women and human rights as well, particularly the rights of women and children because the rights of the most weak from the society are fundamental. We need to be careful in protecting the rights of those groups.
Y.R. : Do you believe that we have a role to play as children in the media space ?
LM : You are busy doing exactly what needs to be done. You are busy training yourselves, listening to us, sharing your wills and preoccupations. You are busy generating dynamic exchange of opinion, discussions and participation for your home communities. You are doing exactly what we hope you will do. We really want to help you. Creating exchange with teenagers, schools, doing exchange programmes between villages and cities; you should find European youths to work towards this kind of partnership. You could then go and visit them, and host them in your communities as well.
Y.R : While reading the Forum’s agenda we notice there is so little place for the youth!
LM : There isn’t really a need to have more or less space for the youth. Proof is each of you are present to this forum. In the society, it is more important to have the youth express itself. The society is not the addition of the bolds, plus the women, plus the teenagers, plus the elderly, plus the bearded people. A society is a mix, I love talking with you and we are not of the same age. It is important for interaction to take place between all social, cultural and age categories. It is important that society is not seen as small bubbles or kennels. The interests of the elderly are also yours and vice-versa. The sorrow of a human being has nothing to do with its age or gender. We suffer more or less the same way. A society is build when everyone becomes a team. Teenagers should be given all the means possible to express themselves, be happy and succeed in their lives, contribute to a more prosperous, free and fair society.
